Which aspects of your topic have already been implemented within the company?
In the offices we are printing less and trying to keep everything digital. The pigment lists have also already been digitized.
What are the reasons for the status quo?
Because they never paid much attention to this issue in the lab, and only a few employees even noticed it. When they wanted to make changes in the lab, it was usually due to bigger problems than paper consumption.
What was your highlight?
The highlight was that we grew as a team and got to know each other better. We have become much closer.
What was your biggest hurdle?
The biggest hurdle was that we had to find a solution to the problem. This wasn’t easy, as it was always very difficult to implement in IT terms.
What would you do differently next time?
Next time we could be better organized at the end of the project. We had a long break in January and then got off track.
What have you learned? What will you take away from this experience?
We have learned that it’s not just about the money, but also about considering the issues and thinking about taking another step towards the future. This is likely to take longer because we’re not reducing costs by very much. However, our project isn’t about the money, it’s about the thought process and potential benefits. We estimate it will be pay off in about 20 years.
“Use solar energy, digitize offices completely, and don’t print anything out anymore (unless absolutely necessary)!”
Our results at a glance …
“Sustainability is already an issue for us at home. We keep the temperature moderate, separate the trash, and buy regional produce from local farmers. I’m really excited about the Company Challenge and looking forward to learning more about sustainability.”
“We are the future. I think it’s great that we’re tackling this project and can teach our older colleagues a thing or two. I buy my clothes secondhand if I can, I’m a vegetarian, I rarely fly, and I use public transport. Sustainability is also an issue when working with chemical substances.”
“Climate change is a big problem, hopefully it will get better in the next few years. At work, we now use water instead of solvents for cleaning, and at home we recycle batteries and PET bottles. I hope we’ll learn more about environmental protection in everyday life.”
A progress report from Team 3
Team 3Our team had set itself the goal of digitizing the formulas documented on paper that are used in our laboratory. Over the last few weeks we have worked hard on our project and are already nearing our goal. However, we also encountered some difficulties as it wasn’t initially clear to us why using tablets wouldn’t work. After a long discussion with IT, this was explained to us and we now understand the situation. We subsequently developed three alternative solutions, which we are now pursuing. It’s fun to work as a group because we are a great team and are good at allocating the various tasks.
The first impressions of Team 3
Team 3We enjoyed the day very much, it was really interesting and we learned a lot. Mischa and Dominik did a great job of organizing everything. Listening to them was easy – they explained the topic well and always gave us good examples. The little games we played between the serious stuff gave us a chance to recharge our batteries. But what we enjoyed most was the exhibition, because we could look at the posters in our own time and also ask lots of questions. The experiment with vinegar was also really interesting. We’re already looking forward to the second project day.
About the project
Team 3Team 3 is tackling the digitalization of powder formulas in the lab. When weighing out the raw materials for our powder coatings, our lab staff currently uses formulas printed out on paper. The printouts are only used for a short time and are then shredded. The team plans to reduce the use of paper in the lab by equipping its staff and/or the lab itself with laptops or tablets that will provide digital access to the formulas.
